Singaporeans young and old like to visit Chinatown to soak in the festive atmosphere (nian wei, 年味), where a blend of sights, sounds and sensations from the bustling crowd, busy stalls and auspicious decorations combine to create an ambience of festivity. While the shops and stalls in Chinatown have evolved through the years, the appeal of Chinatown remains unchanged – it continues to provide a common space where people can come together, shop for foods and goods, bask in the festive ambience and make preparations to welcome a prosperous and joyous year ahead.
