Lunar New Year celebrations have often been associated with end-of-harvest celebrations, during which the Chinese community would offer thanks to the deities for a bountiful harvest, and pray for good fortune in the following year. Many of these practices became formalised during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD), with Lunar New Year celebrations gaining popularity during the Tang Dynasty (618 AD - 907 AD).

Visit the Memorial Hall’s festive travelling exhibition to gain a deeper understanding of one of the most important festivals in the Chinese calendar, and learn more about the origins, legends, and customs of the Lunar New Year.

Discover more about traditional Chinese arts with free craft activities at Library@Chinatown, available on 24 February 2018.
