From Chinese prints featuring Taoist Celestial Master Zhang and his tiger, to the foolish tiger and the witty magpie in Korean hojakdo paintings, new year pictures of tigers and other animals are not only embedded with festive symbolisms, they also reflect people’s changing perceptions of, and relationships with, the animal world.
Through reading a selection of traditional and contemporary new year pictures, this talk will lead you into the colourful and imaginative worlds of multi-species coexistence as seen through this fascinating form of folk art..
